Forewords
In this book, Daniel Ho presents a unique and “out of the box” way of thinking about harmonic structure.
Its strength lies in the manner in which he cleverly moves away from prescriptivist theoretical grammar
and re-imagines a set of tools that are easy to grasp, logically applicable, and thoroughly effective.
Let’s face it, performing musicians are practical people—their musical life depends on the ability
to make abstract ideas come alive on stage or in the studio. Daniel’s vast experience in both venues
gives him the knowledge and wherewithal to make this happen in wonderfully compelling ways.
By sharing this knowledge, he provides musicians who have an understanding of the fundamentals
of music theory with formulae for expanding their arranging and composing tool-kit. Here’s a chance
to learn from one of the most fluent and creative musicians with whom I’ve ever had the pleasure of working!

Colorful Sounds is a wolf in sheep’s clothing—a disarming packaging of powerful tools presented by a
master musician. Daniel Ho’s incredible command of harmony has been honed by years in the lightning-
paced world of LA’s commercial music industry. This volume synthesizes a signature facet of his acclaimed
musicianship, that of harmonization. The success of the songs on the GRAMMY® award-winning CD
‘ikena and its follow-up, He Nani, is very heavily indebted to Daniel’s deep knowledge of harmony using
extended chords, and skill in its use. Colorful Sounds makes this knowledge systematic and accessible.
As a songwriting partner, I already enjoy the fruits of his knowledge in the songs we create together.
With Colorful Sounds, I now have a guide to appreciate his knowledge even more.

I met Daniel Ho in 2006. Since then, we have had the pleasure of working, performing, and touring
Europe with the Ars Nova Sinfonia. During one of our many ‘musical’ discussions, Daniel explained
a harmonic method—a unique approach to teaching harmony via chord tones and extensions. It allows
a musician to think and hear in terms of groups of notes—not just note-by-note. Once mastered, this
practical concept will help a musician quickly and ‘colorfully’ compose and arrange music. Additionally,
since the shapes are easy to build, they can become important assets to one’s performing and improvisational
skill set. Applicable in any genre and at virtually any level of experience, it is a method that I now utilize
when teaching composition to my private students. Read the material, complete the exercises, listen to
the CD, and then begin to use the techniques in your own writing and performing. Be sure to analyze
the musical examples in the book—this is a great tool to help you think/see/hear patterns in music.
Colorful Sounds opens the door to all of these. Enjoy!

Dr. William Doyle, DMA - El Camino College, Ars Nova Sinfonia

Introduction

This book presents a harmonic method I have been using in my compositions, arrangements and performances
or over 20 years. It has served me well, and I hope you find this unique perspective equally useful in your
musical creations. One of the simplest ways to create sophisticated harmonies is to think of notes in groups
rather than as individual pitches. This method focuses on modules (groups of notes) with uniform intervallic
relationships and how they are used to build more complex harmonies. They are invaluable because their
consistent sound and shapes are easy to distinguish and intuitive to play on instruments. A fundamental
understanding of music theory is required to benefit from this material. Though the music is printed in black
and white, an audio CD of the examples is included to illustrate just how colorful these sounds really are!

Daniel Ho
